Volunteers Wanted For Desert Watch

A new conservation project known as Desert Watch is about to begin in Lanzarote, one that will observe and record the habitat and wildlife found in the desert of Soo.

The idea of the project was raised by Carmen Portella from the Lanzarote Active Club who was worried about the recent fall in the number of birds spotted during their regular birding activities. When concerns were raised about the decline of birdlife to local councils and associations, it became apparent that there wasn’t a reliable source of data or up to date policy regarding this protected area of the island. Some research had been completed regarding the Houbara Bustard which is classed as an endangered species, but not in respect of the flora and fauna found in the desert.
