The Supreme court met today in Madrid and ruled that oil drilling can take place off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In total, seven appeals, including one from the Canarian government were rejected.
According to a Cabildo press release, the court was composed of 5 judges, with “two dissenting votes against.”
The original exploratory drilling permits were granted in 2001, and re approved in 2012, since when they have been held up with various court actions.
It is thought to be one of the last hurdles for oil company Repsol to begin their €7 Billion drilling project.
