Mango Spring 2014 Collection

Images for Mango’s new collection for their spring catalogue were shot on location in Lanzarote during November.

Daria Werbowy for Mango

Their latest collection features model Daria Werbowy as their new face, who has replaced Miranda Kerr in this role.

Although Daria was born in Poland, she holds Canadian and Ukrainian citizenship. She is perhaps better known as a spokesperson for Lancôme but her impressive list of clients also include Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Pepe Jeans, Gucci, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Chanel among many other big others.

Daria took a two year break from the fashion world and has allegedly moved to Ireland with her boyfriend (sorry, guys!) taking a more relaxed approach to her hectic profession. We certainly would welcome her back on our shores if she decides to pay us another visit!

This indie and rock influenced campaign for Mango was photographed by Josh Olins and styled by Alastair McKimm.

We leave you with “The making of”  video that features some of our island's distinctive landscape, can you name any of the places?

The Ayuntamiento of Tías have been given the green light to start processing building permits for the second stage of the modernisation plan for Puerto del Carmen. This plan is part of the Renovación y Modernización Turística de Canarias which is approved by the Canarian Government and means an investment of 90 million euros into the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen. Work includes 20 private projects to transform apartment complexes and hotels to a four star standard, as well as renovating shopping centres and creating parking and leisure facilities.

The modernisation plan states that once approved, work must begin within one year of obtaining the license and must be operational within two years from the date of the license. Properties outlined for change include:

Transformed to 4* hotels / aparthotels: Balcón del Mar, Don Paco Castilla, Hotel Floresta &  Club Ízaro

The mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández has confirmed that around 250,000 euros has been outlined for work to make the resort of Puerto del Carmen more accessible. Work started in December on the Playa de la Barilla, more commonly known as Playa Chica and has recently expanded to include the area of Playa Los Pocillos.

The council have recognised that over 50 million people with reduced mobility live in Europe and want holiday destinations that have public facilities and transport that are accessible for all. Although some work had already been completed to help the less able around the resort, Puerto del Carmen did not have beaches that were suitable for tourists with mobility difficulties.

The accessible project has been escalated to high priority within the council where in addition to adapting any architectural barriers in the resort, they also want to ensure that there are adequate facilities on the public transport.

Tías have contracted specialists Equalitas Vitae to help with the Plan de Accesibilidad, their first focus will be to advise the shortcomings and work required at Playa Los Pocillos before starting the bigger project of transforming the main beach Playa Grande which includes new ramps and toilet facilities. The primary aim is to convert Playa Grande to be the first beach in all of Lanzarote that is certified as accessible for all.

Pancho Hernández advised that Tías will become the first tourist destination in Lanzarote and innovators within the Canaries to have the award of the first accessible beach. The resort already has the advantage of 4 blue flag awards on each of the major beaches and offer the use of an amphibious chair for people with disabilities or reduced mobility which is available to help them bathe in the sea at Puerto del Carmen.

The tourism councillor for Teguise, Antonio Callero announced on Lancelot Televisión yesterday that the low cost clothing company Primark will open in the holiday resort of Costa Teguise.

primark-logo

Residents of Lanzarote will be delighted by this news, as an island we seem to miss out on some of the low cost outlets found on other Canary Islands. Hopefully, we might not have to wait too long for Primark to open as they are considering commercial premises already in construction in the area of Calle Las Olas.

In English: the information that I have is that Primark in a little time, in the zone of calle Las Olas, are going to have an establishment, that is in construction at this moment. It's a point for the zone of Costa Teguise which will bring more people, not just tourists but from other localities too. Generating employment and shopping in the area which is always positive.

Mention was also made of a company that wants to create a leisure and dining space on the Avenida de Las Cucharas, next to La Pesquera.

Mercadona Supermarket Update January 2014

The Director General of Trade and Consumer Affairs for the Canary Islands has finally approved the first of two commercial licenses for Mercadona to open in Lanzarote.

Mercadona logo

Gustavo Matos acknowledged that there have been years of administrative difficulties, but that the release of this license for the first supermarket in the polígono industrial estate of Argana in Arrecife marks a new stage in the sector. The Director General stated that the increase in competition will specially benefit the consumers, on an island where the cost of shopping is the highest in the archipelago.

The news means that we should now see the first Mercadona supermarket open it’s doors in the capital of Lanzarote before the end of 2014. Initially Mercadona applied to Arrecife council for the license, however when the company decided to increase the size of the store to 2,111 m3 it then exceeded the councils authority, which is limited to commercial premises up to 1,650 m3.

A second license has already been applied to open another store in the Valterra area of Arrecife. In December the company presented a license to the Ayuntamiento of San Bartolomé to open a third supermarket in the industrial area of Playa Honda, which is expected to be operational by mid 2015.

Mercadona will be investing over 19 million euros to open their first two hypermarkets in the capital of Lanzarote.

Sunbed Contract Terminated in Puerto del Carmen

Tías Council have started administrative proceedings to terminate the contract with Jandía First Service On Beach who supply sunbeds for the beaches in the holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen.

Playa Grande Puerto del Carmen

Proceedings have been started by the Ayuntamiento of Tías to terminate the contract due to non payment. Apparently Jandía First Service On Beach S.L.U requested a postponement of the 815,000 euros debt, rather than making the payment on the deadline which passed yesterday, Thursday 23rd of January.

Tourists will be relieved to hear that the council will now take ownership of the sunbeds and umbrellas that are already in place on the beaches of Matagorda, Playa Los Pocillos, Playa Grande and Playa Chica in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Fortunately a clause was written into the contract that in default or through termination the sunbeds and umbrellas become municipal and public property.

Empadron Certificate No Longer Required For Resident Travel Discount

In the future residents will no longer be required to produce copies of their Certificado de Empadronamiento para Viajar to receive the residents discount available in the Canary and Balaeric Islands, for travel within Spain.

Air Europa

Instead the travel agencies, ferry companies and airlines must prove residency of passengers online via the SARA telematics system. You will still need to register with your local council as a resident and make sure that your padron is kept up to date, to be able to receive the 50% discount, plus be able to prove your identity with a valid DNI and passport at check in.

The change was brought about by the government who deemed the issuing of these certificates as an unnecessary procedure.

No date has been given as to when the change will take effect, the amendment was approved by the cabinet on Friday.

Lanzarote was awarded the Best Winter Sun Destination 2014 award by the Irish Travel Agents Association during their gala evening held on Thursday 23rd January.

Irish Travel Awards 2014

It’s the fourth time that Lanzarote has won this award, beating off competition from destinations such as Tenerife, Florida, Gran Canaria and Morocco. The UK based promoter of Lanzarote Tourism received the award on behalf of our local representative Carmen Steinart .

Irish visitors account for the third biggest International market for Lanzarote, with 202,760 Irish tourists arriving in Lanzarote during 2013, this figure was 16.3% more than in 2012 which totalled 174,321 visitors.

In previous years, Lanzarote has also won the same recognition from the Irish International Travel Industry (ITT) on six consecutive occasions.

The tourism department at the Cabildo de Lanzarote consider that “this award reinforces the promotional strategy of Lanzarote, and at the same time defines that the island has a privileged position in the Irish market”.

British Ambassador to Spain received by Lanzarote's President

The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés received Simon Manley, the new British Ambassador to Spain this afternoon.

Simon Manley & Pedro San Gines

Pedro San Ginés officially welcomed Simon Manley to Lanzarote on Tuesday 4th February, this is an important visit for the island given the existing economic and social ties between Lanzarote and the United Kingdom.

The number of British citizens holidaying in Lanzarote grew by 7.2% during 2013, reaching close to one million tourists (959,512), which has been considered as “a huge success” for a mature market and the first on the island. Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination for many living within the UK , we also have around 8,000 British residents on the island.

On this occasion the new ambassador was interested in the island’s economy and promotion aimed at the UK market. The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote transferred recent agreements and the latest forecasts announced by the British tour operators and airlines who operate in Lanzarote, confirming a good perspective for the forthcoming summer and winter season. It’s expected that Lanzarote will reach over a million British tourists by the end of the 2014.

Lanzarote’s president commented "The British have demonstrated their faith in Lanzarote, both with the number of residents and volume of tourists, resulting in British tourism being the principal international market for the island”.

UK Television Satellite Issues

Viewers of UK Television Channels in Lanzarote can expect to experience some issues with their current satellite systems from this week.

satellite-dish

S.E.S. the company responsible for the deployment of the Astra fleet of Satellites have recently announced that Astra 2E has arrived at it’s final destination.

“The satellite was launched on board an ILS Proton launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on September 30, 2013.

Extensive in-orbit tests have since then confirmed the satellite to be fully operational and performing to specifications.

ASTRA 2E has now been deployed at its final destination in the orbital arc of 28.2/28.5 degrees East, where it is co-positioned with ASTRA 2A, ASTRA 2F and ASTRA 1N. Over the coming weeks, BSkyB, Channel4, ITV and BBC programming in this arc will be transitioned to the new satellite with its powerful footprint over the British Isles.”

Over the past 18 months, Agua Clara Marketing, the company that brought the Doulton water filter system to Lanzarote, have been working on a system to capture the free to air channels via the internet through a low cost set top box.

We spoke to owner Ray Allum who explained that it’s taken some development over the last year to find the best route for Lanzarote. Following a major upgrade of the compression system, viewers can now enjoy almost uninterrupted UK Television from the comfort of their sofa with the press of a button on their remote control.

As we’ve found to our detriment over the years, trying to keep up to date with technology that allows you to keep up to date with all your favourite television programmes can be expensive. There are still a number of options to receive British Television programmes in Lanzarote, each have their own strengths / weaknesses and level of risk.

If you’d like to know more about these changes and future options, please contact Ray at www.aguaclara.eu or by email to Ray@aguaclara.eu, he is more than happy to explain the current situation in an unbiased way so that you can make an informed choice about the right television system for you.

Car Access To Famara Beach Closed

$

The dirt road which gives access to the main part of Famara beach was closed to cars this week by “Costas” – the government department responsible for coastal areas of Spain.

Famara Beach

The road in question has always been used by people heading to the quieter parts of the beach, by kitesurfers, hang gliders and people planning to walk the cliff path.

Bizarrely, it would appear that Teguise Ayuntamiento had no notice that this closure was taking place. The council met yesterday to discuss the situation and Mayor Oswaldo Betancort issued a statement condemning Costas for taking the action without consulting the ayuntamiento, and asking in the strongest possible terms for this decision to be reversed by central government. He pointed out that the ayuntamiento are extremely protective of the local environment, but that access to this area fits perfectly with Lanzarote’s stated aim to become one of Europe’s premier sporting destinations.

No Cierre

Locals of all nationalities have reacted against the closure – a protest was held today at the entrance to the town, and several more are planned. The topic is trending on social media with the hashtag #famaranosecierra and with support from a Facebook page Famara NO se cierra, which reached over 700 members in the last 36 hours.

Correct Carnival Dates 2014

It appears that the Gazette have made an error with the carnival dates for both Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca, which is causing some confusion with residents and visitors.

Carnival_Diary_Wrong_Dates_Lanzarote_2014

As you can see in this snapshot of their page from the February edition of their magazine, Playa Blanca is incorrectly listed as the 15th and Costa Teguise the 22nd.

We’d like to confirm that the dates published on our website have been verified by the local councils. The parade in Costa Teguise will be held on Saturday the 15th of March and the Playa Blanca procession will be on Saturday the 29th of March.

Please find links to the councils own websites confirming this information:

Teguise Carnival Poster 2014

We hope that this clarifies the situation, we'll be publishing each of the carnival programmes as they are confirmed and look forward to seeing you at the various carnival processions in Lanzarote.

1 Million Euro Road Improvement Plan

The Cabildo of Lanzarote have started a three month road improvement plan with an investment of one million euros.

Road Surface Mirador del Río

The plan entitled 'Refuerzo de firme em diversos tramos de las carreteras insulares 2013' will be directed by José Antonio Gutiérrez from the Department of Roads & Works. The project worth 1,130,246.68 euros was awarded by public tender to Hormigones Insulares SL (Horinsa SL) and started on the 7th February.

The following six roads have been identified for improvement under this plan:

LZ-20 carretera de San Bartolomé at the intersection with the industrial zone of Argana Alta (resurfacing & signage).

LZ-20 carretera de San Bartolomé at the roundabout with Go Karting San Bartolomé (resurfacing & signage)

LZ-1 Crossroads of Teseguite & Guatiza (resurfacing of the old North road which is now a service road & signage)

LZ-42 Guatiza (resurfacing of the road at the entrance to the village with signage and barriers at the elevated sections)

LZ-301 roundabout with LZ-303 in Güime (resurfacing and signage of the roundabout)

LZ-303 Ye to Mirador del Río (installation of 1.2km of barriers where traffic flows in both directions)

The council is also preparing a multi year plan to invest a further six million euros with more resurfacing work, lighting and improved signage for our roads.

Councillor Gutiérrez commented “we are improving the quality of our roads with these works, but especially effects the safety of the same. In fact in this first improvement project Plan Plurianual that we are currently developing we will be improving the surface, signage both painted on the floor and vertical, installing safety barriers at elevated sections, lighting at intersections, creation of a roundabout where there are crossroads and improvements in areas that already exist.”

Mr Gutiérrez also added that “we want to adapt our roads to  the quality image of tourist destination that we offer and also improve the quality of life for those that live and work in Lanzarote”. “While we understand that it’s not possible to act on all roads, these interventions added to those currently executed by the Gobierno de Canarias in the circunvalación of Arrecife and between Mácher and the roundabout for Playa Quemada, are going to make a significant improvement in the island’s road network as well as boost the quality image of Lanzarote.

Mácher Roadworks Update

We photographed the work in progress on the LZ-2 at the weekend, which connects the capital of Arrecife with the holiday resort of Playa Blanca in the South of Lanzarote.

LZ2 roadworks Feb 2014LZ2 roadworks Feb 2014

Traffic is still single lane in both directions at the moment with a speed restriction of 40 km/h, although you can see the additional lanes taking shape.

The island has some fabulous roads, many are in great condition and it’s a pleasure to drive or cycle here. There are some roads not mentioned above that need some urgent resurfacing attention, two in particular form part of the Ironman Lanzarote bike course and will have over 2,000 cyclists hoping not to suffer a puncture along them this May.

The positive trend of visitors to Lanzarote and the Canary Islands has continued for the first month of 2014.

Terminal 1 Lanzarote Airport

According to the passenger figures from Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) the seven islands received 1,004,200 foreign passengers which is a 14.12% increase compared to January 2013.

Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, the Deputy Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands commented that all of the islands have experienced significant growth from 9% to 25% last month, compared to the previous year and hopes this good trend continues through the winter season.

Lanzarote’s airport recorded 157,313 foreign passengers which was 31,869 more than in January 2013, a positive increase of 25.4%. Overall passenger numbers for Lanzarote during last month was 439,379 which is 17.1% more than in 2013.

There was good news too for Lanzarote’s Centros de Arte, Cultura y Turismo (CACT) visitor centres, they received 46,987 more visitors during January 2014 than the year before, which is an increase of 30.80%. These visitors also spent more in the restaurants and gift shops which increased the revenue in these sectors by 24.15% and 36.37% respectively. This positive increase could be attributed to the increase in tourists, plus the fact that the weather was cooler and wetter than in recent years.

Yamaha Launch New Motorbike In Lanzarote

Yamaha Europe used the island’s fabulous roads to launch their new MT-07 motorbike to the world’s press.

05_MT07_T8A6371

The event was held at The Hesperia Hotel in Puerto Calero, with journalists getting out to clock up around 200 KM of mixed road riding all verthe island. Some of the photos taken, with volcanic or ocean backdrop,s were stunning and have appeared on many websites and magazines.

The MT-07 is a “back to basics” or “naked” bike, with very little bodywork. It features a liquid cooled parallel twin of just under 700C, but producing a healthy 75BHP and plenty of low down torque. The reports we’ve read suggest it’s an impressive bike and they are expecting it to sell very well, given the relatively low price tag of just over £5,000.

Here’s the official Yahama video of the event, which features plenty of places in Lanzarote you’ll recognise!
