Businessman sent to prison for selling counterfeit goods

A Chinese citizen living in Lanzarote has been sentenced to prison for selling counterfeit luxury brands on the island.

Teguise Market

The man was sentenced to five months in prison and ordered to pay €226,625 compensation to Burberry and €29,942 to Gucci during the ruling. Other companies including Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Christian Dior may follow suit with further compensation claims, as their products had also been counterfeited.

The original ruling was made back in May, the case has been highlighted again due to the appeal which was rejected. In this instance the crime was deemed against the brand and not concerning the consumer who would have purchased poor quality goods at a low price.

We wonder what effect this ruling will have on many of the discount shops and market stalls who sell cheap copies of handbags and sunglasses on the island. What do you think?

Summer Statistics 2013

It’s been a good summer and year so far for Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, tourism is up and our tourists are spending more money.

Playa Las Cucharas Costa Teguise

Occupancy

August was a fantastic month for tourism on the island, accommodation establishments have reported an average of 90% occupancy according to preliminary figures via Asolan. Last year the figure was 85.24% and the previous time occupancy reached above 90% was back in August 2007 (90.89%). The increase was mainly due to the British market and a diversion in holidays from Egypt and Turkey. Another factor is a reduction in accommodation prices according to Asolan, prices are as cheap as in the late 80’s with discounts of 20-30%.

Tourism Spend

Figures released by the Instituto Canario de Estadística (Istac) who completed the study of tourist spend showed that this year the spend during the first six months was more than in the same period in 2007, before the start of the economic crisis. In 2008 the tourism spend in Lanzarote was 1,769 million euros, this figure fell drastically to 1,403 million euros in 2009. Since then the amount has been steadily climbing to 1,852 million euros in 2011 and exceeded 1,900 million euros in 2012. The half year figure for 2013 was over 898 million euros and the end of year forecast is looking good.

Economic Situation

The tourism industry is the route to recovery for the Canary Islands, an increase in visitors to the islands and spend during their holidays make for good prospects which can be consolidated in 2014. The Canarian Government expect the GDP growth  to increase from 0.6% estimated for 2014 to 1.6% by 2016, thanks to our tourism - according to the Research Department of the Ministry of Economy , Finance and Security. It’s expected that despite the positive influences this year, we could record a negative growth rate for the Canary Islands but it is still expected to be better than the average for Spain.

Unemployment

Lanzarote started the year with 17,676 registered unemployed in January, which continued to fall during February and March. There was an increase to 17,726 on the paro in April, since then the total has decreased with 17,685 in May, 17,264 in June, 16,882 in July and 16,584 in August.

Arrivals

The domestic market in Lanzarote has fallen by 9,000 tourists from the mainland within the first six months of the year compared to 2012, according to information from the Centro de Datos del Cabildo. The shortfall has been overcome by additional visitors from the United Kingdom and France. Although the French market is still comparatively small, there are flights almost everyday between the island and France. French visitors to the island from January to June total 22,671 for this year, 14,904 more than 2012, which is an increase of almost 192%. Lanzarote has seen a 2.66% rise in British tourists (11,474 more visitors) during the first six months of the year compared to the previous year.

The Canary Islands as a whole received 5.8 million tourists from January to July which accounts for 17.2% of visitors to Spain. The figure represents an increase of 0.9% according to Encuesta de Movimientos Turísticos en Frontera (Frontur), the information was published by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The archipelago was aided by a growth of British and Nordic tourists, which was 2.7% higher in July for the islands than the previous year.

The whole of Spain recorded a new record with 7.9 million foreign tourists visiting the country during July, this was an increase of 2.9% on 2012, but also beating the previous highpoint recorded in 1995.

Lanzarote is the first of the Canary Islands to be certified by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA).

CertificacionRFECdeRUTA-262x300MTB_Routes_in_Lanzarote

The recent certification of Ruta de bicicleta de montaña' (BTT) de Gran Travesía is through the Spanish brand of the association, which denotes approved routes over distances over 100 km.

Lanzarote has a circular mountain bike route of 205 km mapped around the island which has been tested by the association, before it could be entered in the National Register of Mountain Bike Routes.

Both Pedro San Ginés the President of the Cabildo and Migdalia Machín, Minister for Sports welcomed the certification, especially as Lanzarote is the only island in the archipelago that has achieved the IMBA approval.

There are only three routes that have the“Great Trek” certification of over 100 kilometres, they are the Transnevada in Andalucía, ADESGAM in Madrid and now Lanzarote a Pedales in the Canary Islands.

Lanzarote’s MTB route was first launched back in 2009. It has been divided into six different sections, with varying levels of difficulty. More information about these mountain bike routes can be found on the Lanzarote en bici website, the PDF route map is only currently available for download in Spanish.

We think pedal power is a great way to discover Lanzarote, why not hire a mountain bike and take a route a day to discover the real Lanzarote.

Despite being only a few moments away from the voluntary fire station at the top of Calle César Manrique, firefighters extinguished the fire but were unable to save the bus which was virtually destroyed in the incident.

It’s the second Intercity bus to catch fire this year, the first incident was in June when an unoccupied bus caught fire whilst travelling on the Circunvalación ring road in Arrecife.

Thankfully, no one was injured on either occasion.

Bankia to remain open in La Graciosa

The Cabildo of Lanzarote welcomed the announcement from Bankia this week, that they will keep their branch open on the island of La Graciosa.

Bankia-LaGraciosa

Bankia had previously announced that the bank situated in La Graciosa was one of the 54 branches to be closed in the Canary Islands, many of which were inherited from La Caja de Canarias. This news sparked protests from the island’s residents and the Ayuntamiento of Teguise as the impending closure would have meant a ferry and bus ride to the next closest branch In Haría, when they needed to visit the bank.

On Tuesday Bankia announced that they would keep their branch open in La Graciosa, as an example of their Canarian social commitment.  The La Graciosa branch of Bankia has 400 customers and will continue to open for 2 days a week.

Earlier this month Oswaldo Betancort, the Mayor of Teguise met with the José Miguel Lorenzo Santana, the regional director of Bankia regarding their decision to close the only bank on the island of La Graciosa. It was made clear during the meeting that if the bank was to continue with the closure of this branch, both the local council of Teguise and the Cabildo of Lanzarote would withdraw their funds and cancel any accounts connected with Bankia, as leverage in order to safeguard the essential service for the residents of La Graciosa.

The president of the Cabildo expressed appreciation on behalf of the island’s Corporation for the social decision finally adopted by the bank, in providing a necessary service for the residents of the eighth island.

Lanzarote Sky in November

Lanzarote has a beautiful sky, not only do we enjoy a stunning shade of blue most days, there are many places where you can observe the stars in the evening without being spoiled by light pollution.

There are two events happening in November where you should be able to observe a partial eclipse of the sun and a meteor shower in Lanzarote.

Partial Solar Eclipse

On Sunday 3rd November, there will be a full solar eclipse in Kenya, which can be seen as a partial solar eclipse from the Canary Islands. The partial eclipse will start at 10:56 reaching the maximum eclipse at 12:11 and finishing at 13:31, these times relate to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. Lat.: 28.1108° N & Long.: 15.4468° W

Take caution to protect your eyes when observing this eclipse.

Leonid Meteor Shower

Previous editions of the Leonid meteor shower have been among some of the greatest in history, that won’t be the case with 2013 as the moon will interfere with the visibility. The best time to view the Leonids will be after midnight on the 16th November until dawn on the 17th, the sky will be flooded with moonlight but you may still be able to spot meteors, which increase in frequency closer to sunrise.

Jet2.com base in Lanzarote

A Boeing 737 from Jet2.com checked in for it’s first overnight stay at the airport in Lanzarote on Thursday, marking the official opening of their base on the island.

The British company had confirmed earlier this year that one of their planes would be based at Arrecife Airport (ACE) overnight from November. The Boeing 737-800 will stay six nights a week in Lanzarote, excluding Wednesdays. A team of 20 people including the crew and technical staff will accompany the plane overnight, which will have an immediate positive impact on economy for small and medium enterprises situated on the island.

Carmen Steinert, Minister of Tourism for the Cabildo of Lanzarote welcomed the company to the island and wished them the best of luck in the action taken. In addition the tourist board valued the action taken by the company who won the award Isla de Lanzarote 2012 commenting that the “fact of having a plane based in Lanzarote and the routes launched during last winter means an increase of 68% in seating capacity offered by Jet2.com to Lanzarote”. “The arrival of Jet2.com to the island is a small respite for the island’s economy and at the same time confirmation of the good momentum for the destination of Lanzarote in the UK market”.

Also it’s worth remembering that Enrique Ruiz de Lera, the director of the Spanish Tourist Office in London told the Lanzarote delegation at the World Travel Market that the number of places offered to the island in the British market had grown by 30% during 2013, which is well above the rest of the country (11%),

The Cabildo of Lanzarote have signed a collaboration agreement to protect the beautiful landscape of El Golfo during the shooting of In the Heart of the Sea.

In the heart of the sea collaboration agreement in Lanzarote

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Pedro San Ginés signed the collaboration agreement with producer SF ITHOTS CANARIAS, S.L.. to ensure the protection of the Parque Natural de Los Volcanes in El Golfo, plus the restoration of the access for use in the shooting of the Warner Bros film “In the heart of the sea”, directed by Ron Howard.

The one year renewable agreement, involves a payment of €27,663.27 euros to the council for maintenance of the access roads and tracks, which will be supervised and co-ordinated by a joint committee consisting of the Directora Insular de Planificación y Coordinación de Proyectos and Juan Antonio Cano Trujillo (SF ITHOTS CANARIAS, S.L..).

Besides Pedro San Ginés and the Canarian producer, two representatives from the U.S. giant Warner Bros attended the signing. At the end, the President expressed his satisfaction of the collaboration “it’s really significant that Lanzarote is part of a blockbuster film like ‘In the heart of the sea’, which places Lanzarote back in the circuit of Hollywood locations with a high level director like Ron Howard”.

The scenes to be shot in Lanzarote will bring a team of around 300 people to the island, including the director, supporting actors and technicians. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy & Ben Whishaw in an adaption of the novel about the Whaleship Essex and a great white whale.

The president said “We should all be very satisfied with the international relevance of this film being linked to Lanzarote”.

Guanche style expedition from Lanzarote to La Palma

On Sunday 24th of November a hand built raft named Osa Menor will set sail from Lanzarote for the island of La Palma.

Osa Menor in Arrecife

The expedition to navigate this raft was proposed by Sergio Navío Vasseur to dispel the widespread theory that the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, were not sailors. The name Osa Menor translates to Little Bear and was chosen in honour of two historians Rafael González Antón & María del Carmen del Arco Aguilar from Tenerife who published a book called Los enamorados de la Osa Menor. Navegación y pesca en la Protohistoria de Canarias in 2007.

osamenorpruebademar1osapopa2

The rudimentary raft has been constructed by hand using samba logs bound together with rope, the design is based on a study of old boats from across the world featuring a rudder and centreboard. Lanzarote artist Manuel Perdomo has painted the spiral symbol on the cotton sail which is typical of the primitive art found in the islands. The small cabin features panels made from palm trees, which were created by the Haría based artisan Eulogio Perdomo.

The six man crew of Osa Menor hope to draw attention to what they believe is an error in the research about our Aboriginal islanders, by demonstrating that it is possible to cross between the islands using local raw materials and using the sun, moon and stars for navigation. The straight line distance between Lanzarote and La Palma is around 250 miles, it’s not known how long this crossing is going to take, depending upon the wind, they could finish in El Hierro.

We wish Sergio and the crew of the Osa Menor the very best of luck for their crossing, we’ll be watching for updates on their Facebook profile Travesia Osa Menor

La Geria wins International Award CICOP 2013

Our beautiful and unique landscape of Lanzarote’s wine region known as La Geria has won the Centro Internacional para la Conservación del Patrimonio (CICOP) prize in the cultural landscape category.

La Geria wine region LanzaroteVine section in a hoyo

This award was given for the work in preserving the natural landscape, La Geria was given as an example of where people can work in harmony with the landscape, it  was also commented that Lanzarote is an island with exceptional heritage resources.

La Geria is the area of Lanzarote which was covered in a deep layer of volcanic ash during the eruption from 1730 – 1736. Fertile pastures that had previously been used for growing cereal crops and grazing for cattle had been buried. When the villagers returned they found a vast expanse of volcanic ash which had been blown in the wind from the Cuervo volcano. The local Bishop who needed wine for the church tasked labourers with digging down through the volcanic ash to find the fertile soil. The region of La Geria can easily be identified by the Hoyos which are the deep holes ranging from 1-3 metres deep and up to 4 metres wide, a semi circle of stones called a Zoco is placed around the top of the hole to prevent the prevailing trade winds from blowing the ash. Instead of being a disaster, a miracle was born out of the situation, the vines flourished as the ash had solved a long standing issue of Lanzarote’s lack of a natural water source. These particles of ash are porous and absorb the humidity and overnight dew into the ground to nourish the vines whilst protecting the roots from the heat of the sun. The traditional methods of cultivating the vines has not changed over the centuries, it is very labour intensive and carried out by hand.

The award ceremony won’t be held until the 12th December and will take place at the Universidad de La Laguna in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

La Geria was submitted to the Fundación CICOP which translates to the International Centre for the Conservation of Heritage by Juan Antonio de la Hoz from the Servicio de Patrimonio Histórico at the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

Yaiza want to evict the company providing sunbeds on Playa Flamingo

The Ayuntamiento of Yaiza have asked the Demarcación de Costas de Canarias to evict the company currently offering sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and the kiosk on Playa Flamingo beach in the holiday resort of Playa Blanca.

Playa FlamingoSunbeds Playa Flamingo

According to the council, the company known as Flamibeach S. L. have not paid any fee nor have the necessary permits to operate the sunbeds and other services currently offered on this beach. The company remain in operation at the beach, despite the complaint which was filed in July, the council have been trying since September to invite tenders for this service but it’s been difficult due to the fact that the beach is still occupied by more than 200 sunbeds and umbrellas.

It seems inevitable that once this company has finally been evicted from the beach, there will be a number of weeks where the beach will be left empty, in it’s natural state without sunbeds until a new agreement is confirmed. Let’s hope that it doesn’t turn in to a similar debacle experienced in Puerto del Carmen where our tourists were left without beach services from Easter until the end of July.

Two teachers and 15 students from the University of Hertfordshire flew to Lanzarote to study the impact of tourism on our local community, environment and economy.

University of Hertfordshire in LanzaroteUniversity of Hertfordshire at the Escuela de Turismo de Lanzarote

The delegation of tourism students aged between 20-25 years old, visited the Escuela de Turismo de Lanzarote (EUTL)  in Tahíche, Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism and the Fundación César Manrique during their visit.

Students learned of the courses offered at our Tourism School and were given two talks, one entitled “Lanzarote. Phases & Problems. Opportunities. XX Anniversary of A Pioneering Biosphere Reserve (Unesco, MaB Programme, 1993)” by Aquilino Miguélez, from the Observatorio de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Lanzarote, and another from Héctor Fernández, the managing director of the Patronato de Turismo de Lanzarote (tourism board) in Lanzarote. Journalist Larry Yaskiel also gave a presentation on the relationship between the UK and Lanzarote.

The Minister of Education and Culture of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Emma Cabrera was full of praise for the visit to promote the island of Lanzarote and boost the work of the EUTL, she commented “It's very good news that a prestige university such as Hertfordshire were fixed on our Tourism School and the tourism destination of Lanzarote as a good example of our relationship with universities and our social environment. The education contribution from the creation of a sustainable destination is very important and positively welcomed that it has been internationally recognised.”

Sunbeds in Costa Teguise

$

The latest holiday resort in Lanzarote to be affected by sunbed contracts is Costa Teguise.

Sunbed in Costa TeguiseSunbeds on Playa Las Cucharas

Apparently the sunbed operator Servicios Canarios en Playa S.L. (Secapla) who manage 850 sunbeds situated on Playa Las Cucharas, Playa Jablillo, Playa Bastian and Playa Los Charcos did have an agreement but it expired in 2010. As such the Ayuntamiento have now given 15 days notice notice for the company to remove all of their equipment from the beaches in Costa Teguise.

A contract was awarded to Secapla in September 2000 for an initial five year period, which was then extended until the 31st March 2010. Despite not having a current agreement from 2010 to 2013, the operator has continued to pay the annual fee in the region of €105,000 to operate on these beaches.

The council is looking to their counterparts in Tías who secured a much more lucrative contract for their beaches earlier in the summer, a different situation but never the less it’s looking like there won’t be sunbeds adorning the beaches in Costa Teguise in the lead up to Christmas. Once the equipment is removed, the council will open this service for tender, where the existing company and others can compete for the contract. It seems the situation came to light in the summer, however the council did not want to disrupt the peak season by taking action then, it’s hopeful that a new contract can be agreed and operational within a month.

Height restriction in place on the circunvalacion

A height restriction of 4.5 metres is in place from today on the Circunvalacíon, Arrecife ring road on the section from Arrecife to Costa Teguise.

Height Restriction Sign

Vehicles exceeding 4.5m will need to divert through Tahiche to connect with the resort of Costa Teguise and the puerto de Los Mármoles. The height restriction will remain in place until the structures for the new junction for Costa Teguise are completed.

The alternative route proposed by the Canary Government for drivers of heavy goods vehicles exceeding this dimension is to divert through Tahiche on the LZ-1 and use the LZ-34 in and out of Costa Teguise.

The Consejería de Obras Públicas, Transportes y Política Territorial del Gobierno de Canarias requested that drivers respect the signs and the limits as directed by the authorities and traffic personnel.

This diversion will relieve a little of the traffic congestion along the old coast road by Las Caletas, however it's a long way round for any heavy goods vehicles wanting to access the freight port of Lanzarote.
