We were shocked and saddened to hear that our regular writer Barbra Plunkett lost her battle with cancer towards the end of last year.

Barbra

Barbra and her husband Robin, together with their cat Nancy, moved to the island in December 2010 – Robin had retired as a college lecturer and Barbra was a Director at the same college.

She contacted us almost as soon as they arrived and we were delighted to have her fascinating posts for the website. They gave our readers a whole new perspective on what it was like here for recent arrivals, the early retired and for vegetarians in Lanzarote. Some of her most popular articles were written from the perspective of Nancy the cat, as she came to terms with her new and very different lifestyle.

This is what Robin had to say to us:

My beloved Barbra (Barbra Plunkett) died on 01 November last.

It’s official, the dreaded jellyfish are back for the first time this year. We’ve received a Jellyfish Campaign notice from the Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias de Lanzarote with some general advice and preventive recommendations about how to avoid and deal with jellyfish stings.

Jellyfish Campaign

The notice was issued on the 16th April, just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend, when jellyfish warnings were being posted on the affected beaches of Lanzarote.

Beach goers are asked to be vigilant and take notice of flags or warning notices placed by the beach lifeguards to advise users that “medusas” have been found to be present in the water that day.

The following advice has been issued by Dirección General de Sostenibilidad de la Costa y del Mar del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Medio Rural y Marino (MAMR) of what to do if stung by a jellyfish.

Treatment of jellyfish stings

* Do not scratch or rub the affected area

* Wash the area with sea water, never with sweet water

* Remove any debris from the jellyfish with tweezers

* Apply cold water for 15 minutes to reduce the pain, if using ice avoid direct contact with the skin, place the cubes in a plastic bag first

* Do not apply ammonia, vinegar or urine  read more »

Protecting the Volcan del Cuervo

We were invited to attend an event at the stunning Volcán del Cuervo today to highlight the damage being caused by walkers.

Guides at Volcan del CuervoVolcan del Cuervo

The Cuervo volcano is a magnificent example of our volcanic landscape and is easily accessible, within a five minute stroll from the road. Responsible for much of the the volcanic ash that created the wine region La Geria, this volcano is not just a beauty spot but is also an important monument to the island’s history.

El Cuervo translates to the raven, although it’s actually home to pair of Barbary Falcons who are currently nesting at the site. They are frequently disturbed by walkers trekking up the sides of the volcano to walk the ridge, something that is prohibited but upon visiting El Cuervo you wouldn’t know this. At the moment there are no signs warning that visitors should stick to the footpath around the base and into the centre, and many have already carved footpaths up the loose picón on the outside.

Please do not follow in the footsteps of others, if you are visiting the Volcán del Cuervo, stick to what is obviously the path from the municipality boundary sign on the LZ-56, this whole landscape is a protected area Parque Natural Los Volcanes. Step over the chain with the no entry sign to stop traffic from entering and follow the path around to  read more »

Work has begun on replenishing the sand on some of the beaches in Costa Teguise so that they are ready for the summer season.

Playa el Jablillo

Costa Teguise has five beautiful beaches, all of which were man made when the holiday resort was created back in the eighties. Nearly 2,500 cubic metres of sand will be transported from the sand quarry in Muñique to top up the sand at Playa el Jablillo & Playa Los Charcos in the resort. This work will not effect the beaches of Playa Las Cucharas and Playa Bastián both of which have not lost any sand.

As with the sunbed authorisation, these requests take time as permission has to be sought from the Costas authority. The council has  read more »
