Three small earthquakes were recorded off the coast of Lanzarote & Fuerteventura yesterday, the largest of which measured 3.7 on the Richter scale.
The first quake was recorded at 01:36:58 (GMT) on the 11th June close to Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura which reached a magnitude of 3.7 degrees and is reported to have been felt in Lanzarote. The second tremor was off the west coast of Lanzarote registering 2.0 on the Richter scale at 06:41:17 (GMT). A third was registered as 2.4 back off the coast of Fuerteventura a couple of minutes later at 06:43:48 (GMT).
As you can see from the last 10 days seismic activity published by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) there’s little tremors around the Canary Islands most days which are not generally felt on land.
The tremors have sparked the discussion of oil exploration off the islands of Lanzarote & Fuerteventura, which despite all the protests and legal disputes, seem destined to go ahead in the near future.
