Housing Crisis Being Needs To Be Addressed

The case of “Gabriela” who was evicted from her home in Arrecife and protested outside The Cabildo, has sparked debate about the current shortage of residential housing stock on the island. There are many factors - the increase in tourism, with the subsequent increase in holiday lettings, the lack of a cohesive housing plan since 2012, the lack of new build properties, empty properties on the island, often owned by banks, the way the law favours tenants which discourages some owners from renting longer term and the increase in the island’s population. The bottom line is there is a desperate shortage of affordable rental accommodation, particularly in Playa Blanca and Arrecife, so hopefully this issue will be address shortly.

Average of 55,000 Tourists On The Island On Any Given Day

Recent figures suggest there are an average of 55,000 tourists in Lanzarote on any given day, swelling the island’s resident population by a staggering 37% to over 200,000.  read more »
