The continuing lack of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches of Puerto del Carmen is now a major concern for tour operators.

The sunbeds were removed at Easter and there are two months left before the peak summer season. The reason for the concern is that tourists may try to claim for compensation for the lack of amenities as advertised in travel brochures or experienced on previous visits.

Both tourism organisations Asolan and Aetur have raised concerns and asked that the issue is addressed as soon as possible so that our tourism is not affected. Tías Ayuntmiento insist that they are hurrying to resolve the problem. The president of Asolan warned the council that if tourists claim from the tour operator, they in turn may raise a claim for compensation from the municipality of Tías. Nerea Santana, the councillor for tourism in Tías confirmed that the council is very concerned about the issue and the situation is being processed as a matter of urgency. They cannot promise that the sunbeds will be in place by tomorrow but within a short space of time.

Both organisations agree that the situation must be resolved before the summer, they understand the slow administration process and will continue to monitor the progress.

We think the beach looks beautiful without the rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, it’s not a facility we’ve ever used as we prefer to lie on the sand. However we do understand how important this facility is for a lot of people, especially those with mobility problems. We’d like to see a smaller section of the beaches allocated to sunbeds so that we can enjoy it’s natural beauty as well as provide amenities for those who want them.
