Since the 1st of September 2012 residents in the Canary Islands have had to prove their entitlement to discounted travel in Spain with a travel certificate issued by their town hall. This is due to change from the 1st of November when airlines, ferry companies and travel agents will have access to query your residency status, when reserving travel between the Canaries and Peninsular.
Residents who are registered on the padron with their local ayuntamiento are entitled to 50% discount off planes and ferries to help with the cost of travelling within the archipelago and connecting to the mainland. If you have registered correctly, there is no need to carry the Certificado de empadronamiento para viajes from this Saturday.
The announcement about the new Sistema Acreditación Residencia Automático (SARA). was made by the Ministerio de Fomento today.
