La Graciosa is one of the few places left on the planet without any tarmac roads. But there are cars there – mainly Land Rovers, with a smattering of pick ups and other 4 X 4’s. They are used to transport people and goods to different parts of the island, and they stick to the sandy “roads” that have been used since La Graciosa was first populated.
It might surprise you to know what there are around 100 vehicles in total on the island and there are two questions people often ask:
How do they get to the island?
The ferries which run between La Graciosa and Orzola are passenger only boats. So when cars, or any other very large items have to be moved, they are put on a large flat barge and towed across.
How are they ITV tested?
The ITV test is the Spanish equivalent of the MOT – cars are inspected either every two years, every year or every six months, depending on their age, for safety, emissions and correct operation. It would be too expensive to have to send cars to the larger island every year, so the ITV team from Lanzarote visits La Graciosa every six months, taking all their testing equipment with them. They spend a few days there, and work their way through every car that needs testing.
