Two areas in the south of Lanzarote have been identified as possible sites for a new airport on the island to increase tourism.

Janubio CoastlineSalinas de Janubio

The project known as Aeródromo del Janubio is the initiative of Francisco Rosas and has been endorsed by the Federación de Empresarios Turísticos de Lanzarote (Aetur).

The first and most obvious location is at Llanos de la Mareta near the desalination plant and Salinas de Janubio, the downside is that this is also a protected area for birdlife. This is the most logical site from the aviation point of view and there is a precedent of airports invading protected areas. The project has been submitted to the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea and received a green light from the Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (Aena).

The second location noted isin the zone situated to the west of Las Breñas. Rosas has enlisted the support of Aetur whose presidente Victoriano Elvira stressed the importance of the airport for the development of trade and tourism on the island, as long as the sustainability and environmental standards are respected.

What do you think - Does Lanzarote need a second airport?
