Jellyfish Warning 2014

It’s official, the dreaded jellyfish are back for the first time this year. We’ve received a Jellyfish Campaign notice from the Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias de Lanzarote with some general advice and preventive recommendations about how to avoid and deal with jellyfish stings.

The notice was issued on the 16th April, just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend, when jellyfish warnings were being posted on the affected beaches of Lanzarote.

Beach goers are asked to be vigilant and take notice of flags or warning notices placed by the beach lifeguards to advise users that “medusas” have been found to be present in the water that day.

The following advice has been issued by Dirección General de Sostenibilidad de la Costa y del Mar del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Medio Rural y Marino (MAMR) of what to do if stung by a jellyfish.

Treatment of jellyfish stings

* Do not scratch or rub the affected area

* Wash the area with sea water, never with sweet water

* Remove any debris from the jellyfish with tweezers

* Apply cold water for 15 minutes to reduce the pain, if using ice avoid direct contact with the skin, place the cubes in a plastic bag first
